Nasolabial folds are the lines that extend from the corners of the nose to the sides of the mouth.

They are a type of "gravitational fold", caused and deepened over time by the effects of gravity, as the facial muscles and skin begin to sag.

Volume in our faces is created by the facial muscles and the facial fat pads that surround these muscles. As we age, we start to lose facial fat and facial muscle weakens, reducing facial volume and leading to the first wrinkles.

Sometimes, if the facial muscles start to weaken, the weight of the facial fat pads can push the muscles downwards towards the lower part of the face, leading to folds in areas where muscles connect, as well as the appearance of jowls. This can be exacerbated post-menopause as we start to lose bone density in the cranial and facial bones.

Two ways face yoga can help to reduce nasolabial folds

Face yoga can help to reduce nasolabial folds in two key ways:

  • By strengthening and building volume in the facial muscles, specifically those of the upper and lower cheeks and the jaw. Building volume in the muscles helps to create a fuller, more plumped appearance. Strengthening those muscles helps them to stay strong and to lift the facial fat pads alongside them.

  • By activating and lifting the largest skull muscles, especially the temporalis. Weakness in this heavy muscle can cause it to push down on the facial muscles below, leading to sagging facial muscles (of the eyelids, cheeks and jaw). Activating and lifting the temporalis can lift and rejuvenate the entire face!
